How to Replace the Toner in a Dell 3100CN

When the toner runs out on a Dell Laser Printer 3100CN, the printer won't be able to produce documents. There are four cylindrical toner cartridges of different colors located in a compartment inside the printer's front cover. A message on the computer screen indicates which cartridge is empty and then you have to select the toner cartridge on the printer control panel to make it accessible inside the toner cartridge compartment. The good news is these cartridges are a breeze to replace.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Menu" button on the control panel.

    • 2

Press the down arrow and select "Replace Toner," and then press the right arrow.

    • 3

Press the up or down arrow to select the toner cartridge that needs to be replaced and press the "Enter" key (the key with the arrow that comes down and turns left on it). Allow the printer to acknowledge your selection and go to the next step.

    • 4

Use the hand notch on the top of the printer's front cover to pull the cover down. The machine should have moved the toner cartridge you selected to replace to the front of the toner compartment.

    • 5

Flip up the handle on the right side of the toner cartridge and pull the cartridge straight out of the printer. Wrap the cartridge in paper towels or an old cloth to contain any ink residue.

    • 6

Shake the new toner cartridge to distribute the ink and remove its packaging tape and plastic tabs.

    • 7

Insert the toner cartridge into the printer, using the arrows on the cartridge and the arrows in the printer to align it. The cartridge snaps into place when it's installed correctly.

    • 8

Lower the handle on the right side of the toner cartridge to secure it into place.

    • 9

Repeat the procedure for each toner cartridge you need to replace.
