How to Fish in Puerto Montt, Chile

How to Fish in Puerto Montt, Chile thumbnail
The Chilean lake district has brown trout and salmon.

Puerto Montt is situated in the lake district of Chile, on the southern tip of South America. This is far enough south that the climate corresponds to that of Washington state. And the flora and fauna are similar in many ways, too.

Chilean tourist authorities market the region in part by talking about the gigantic brown trout that prowl its streams, but salmon are also a big draw. Fishing is best in the many rivers, but there are also lakes holding both salmon and trout. Finding good fishing spots can be difficult for foreigners, as can getting to them, as the roads peter out some distance south of Puerto Montt. To reach the best fishing, it is advisable to hire a local guide. The travel agencies in Puerto Montt can help with locating specific guide services.
