How to Test DNS Online
A Domain Name System (DNS) server contains a database of the IP addresses and domain names of websites that are live on the Internet. Each time that you type a web address such as "www.ehow.com" into the address bar of your Internet browser, your local DNS server looks it up in the database to find the IP address of the server where the website is hosted. The DNS server then uses that information to connect you to the website. You can check to see if your DNS server is working by trying to directly connect to a website by IP address.

1
Open your Internet browser and try to go online. If your home page does not load, you may be experiencing DNS resolution problems, there may be problems with your home page or your Internet connection may be down.
-
2
Type a web address such as "www.ehow.com" into the address bar of your browser window. If this page does not load, you may be experiencing problems with your Internet connection or with your local DNS server.

3
Type the IP address for a public website, such as eHow's "http://98.124.249.20" into the address bar of your web browser. If this page loads, it confirms that connectivity problems are DNS related, since IP addresses resolve without the need for a DNS server.
