How to Shift a 98 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
You just bought a 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. But it's a six-speed manual transmission and you don't know how to shift it. This may be your first time with a manual car or just your first time in a manual-transmission Z28. Either way, you've got to know how to shift the car to drive it properly and not stall the vehicle.

1
Locate the clutch and shifter. The clutch is on the left side of the driver's-side floor board. The shifter will be in the center console of the vehicle.
-
2
Press down on the clutch with your left foot and move the shifter to the left and up. This is first gear. Make sure the shifter is all the way to the left before you push it up or you might put it into third gear. Second gear is right below first gear. To get from first to second while you're driving, let off the gas and press the clutch in. Once the clutch is in, move the shifter directly down from first gear. Once in second, you can push down on the gas again.

To shift into third, let off the gas and push the clutch in. Move the shifter up from second, in between first and second. Then move the shifter slightly to the right and up. This is third gear. It is not a big gap between first and third. Then you may push on the gas again. Don't move the shifter all the way to the right or you'll put the car in fifth gear. Fourth gear is right below third. To shift into fourth, let off the gas and push the clutch in. Then move the shifter directly down from third. This is fourth gear. You can then get back on the gas.

Let off the gas and push in the clutch. Move the shifter up and all the way to the right to shift into fifth gear. If your shifter is not all the way to the right, you might be in third gear. Once you're in fifth gear, you can push down on the gas again. Sixth gear is right below fifth gear. To shift into sixth, let off the gas, push in the clutch and push the shifter straight down.

Reverse in your 1998 Z28 is all the way to the right and down with the shifter. There is nothing above reverse on a six-speed manual transmission. To put your car into reverse, go from neutral, which is in the middle of all the gears (essentially not in any gear). Push in the clutch and push the shifter all the way to the right and down.

Tips & Warnings
A simple way to judge how much pressure to pedal when letting off the clutch and getting on the gas is to think of an egg being under the gas pedal and pushing down with just enough force to get the car going but not enough to crack the imaginary egg.
Dropping your car into reverse while in any gear and moving forward will drop your transmission out of the car. Only put the car in reverse from a complete stop.
