How to Connect a PC to HDTV DVI

Most HDTVs do not have VGA connectors, and the ones that do typically support a resolution of 1024x768, not the full HDTV resolution of 1920x1080. Additionally, most computers do not have HDMI ports to output their signal to an HDTV. DVI bridges the gap between the computer and the HDTV, which allows the two formats to connect.

Things You'll Need

• DVI to HDMI video cable
• 3.5mm to stereo RCA audio cable

Instructions

1. Connect the DVI end of the video cable to the computer.

2. Connect a 3.5mm end of the audio cable into the computer. Typically, the plug inserts into the light-green jack.

3. Connect the HDMI end of the video cable to an HDMI input on the TV that also supports external audio via RCA jack.

4. Connect the RCA end of the audio cable to the RCA jacks on the HDMI input of the TV.

5. Choose the correct input on the TV. This is the input with HDMI + external audio. Typically, HDTV's will have a single input that supports this type of connection.

6. Configure the appropriate resolution on the computer. This will be 1280x720 or 1980x1020 for 720p and 1080p, respectively.

Tips & Warnings

• Unlike HDMI, the DVI standard does not transmit audio on the same cable as video. This is why the extra audio cable is required for this setup.
