How to Format a New CD-RW Disk in Ubuntu

How to Format a New CD-RW Disk in Ubuntu thumbnail
Ubuntu's disc authoring program, Brasero, lets you erase and format CD-RW discs easily.

The big advantage of CD-RW discs is their rewritability: they can be erased and rewritten over and over again. Like other operating systems, Ubuntu supports CD-RW hardware, and Ubuntu's default free disc authoring program, Brasero, lets you erase CD-RW discs with a few clicks.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Applications," "Sound and Video" and "Brasero Disc Burner." Brasero comes installed by default on all versions of Ubuntu since 8.04, but if it isn't installed on your system, install it quickly by clicking "Applications" -> "Accessories" -> "Terminal" to bring up a command prompt. Type:

      sudo apt-get install brasero

When the installation process is complete, run Brasero from the "Applications" menu.

    • 2

Insert a CD-RW disc in your drive.

    • 3

Click Brasero's "Tools" menu, and then click "Blank..."

    • 4

Use the drop-down menu to select the drive with the CD-RW disc in it, and click the "Blank" button. The process shouldn't take too long, and your disc will be ready to use afterwards.
