Power-up items are an iconic staple of the "Mario Kart" franchise. Banana peels, heat-seeking blue shells and power-up mushrooms from past Mario Kart games return in "Mario Kart Wii." Earned by driving through the multi-colored cubes, power-up items can serve as weapons or as boost items, with each providing a unique ability. However, for some gamers, these items may serve as a nuisance--an irritating characteristic about the game. Luckily, you can turn off items during gameplay, but only in "Versus" and "Battle" modes.

Instructions

    • 1

Select "Start" from the Wii menu.

    • 2

Select either "Versus" or "Battle" mode.

    • 3

Choose your items option from the rules menu. Using your Wii remote, select "none" on the items column. You also have the ability to configure items to three other options: the "balanced" setting, which causes items to appear equally; the "aggressive" setting, which causes damage items, such as shells and lightning, to appear more often; and the "strategic" setting, which causes player power-ups to appear more frequently.
