The job requires a screwdriver.

If you've been having problems with the LCD monitor on your Gateway laptop, chances are it lies either with inverter, a rectangular circuit board that funnels power from the source to the screen, or the LCD ribbon. Either way, if you want to fix the problem, there is going to be some disassembly of the screen required. The procedure doesn't require much technical knowledge.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off your Gateway laptop and slide the battery out of its compartment on the bottom of the computer. Make sure the display is open.

    • 2

Use your fingers to pop the rubber covers off of the four screws on the top of the plastic frame that surrounds the LCD screen. Remove the covers on the two screws on the bottom corners of the screen.

    • 3

Remove all six screws from the plastic LCD frame.

    • 4

Pry the frame gently away from the screen and set it aside. The inverter board can now be seen mounted below the screen.

    • 5

Make sure the two cables (screen cable and backlight cable) that connect at either end of the screen are secure in their ports. If they aren't, plug them securely into the ports. If this doesn't fix the screen proceed to Step 6.

    • 6

Remove the remaining two screws from each of the metal brackets on either corner of the bottom of the screen.

    • 7

Pull the screen itself slightly away from the back of the computer and you will see the screen cable connected at the back of it.

    • 8

Remove the tape covering the ribbon cable and make sure it is secure in the port in the back of the screen. If it isn't, use your fingers to secure it in its port. Replace the tape and reverse the procedure for screen reassembly. Any connection issues with your screen should be fixed.
