How to Obtain a CISSP IAT3/IAT3 Certification
Obtaining a CISSP IAT3/IAT3 certification can ensure that the certification meets the DoD 8570.1 directive for network security managers and network security personnel. This is especially important for military and government or Department of Defense employees who, in accordance with the DoD 8570.1, if certifications are taken must be accredited under the ISO/IEC Standard 17024, and the personnel must continue their education to maintain the certification as well. The DoD 8570.1 specifies certifications that are considered acceptable, including the CISSP as well as A+, N+, S+, and others, with the underlying purpose of the directive being to increase the number of qualified information security personnel in military and DoD arenas.

1
Study the CISSP materials to ensure that when the time comes for the exam, there is a solid understanding of the core concepts. A great deal of the exam scenarios involve civilian business situations, and there is significant emphasis on safety of employees, which can seem "foreign" to active-duty military personnel who are unaccustomed to designing or managing projects from the civilian perspective. Studying, reviewing and taking practice tests will help familiarize the exam candidate with the concepts and standard procedures for CISSPs.

2
Obtain orders from a commanding officer detailing that the CISSP certification sought meets with the DoD 8570.1 guidelines. In many military cases, the exam costs can be covered or reimbursed if the soldier's or officer's job benefits from his certification as a CISSP. Officers who take a Functional Area 53, Information Systems Management, will be provided classes and study materials as well as the opportunity to take the CISSP certification exam as part of their FA53 training. DoD personnel may or may not require orders, depending on their specific job. Civilians do not require orders, and the DoD 8570.1 directive does not apply.

IAT-3 is a categorization label used by the U.S. military that means "Information Assurance Technician," with the "3" designating the third level. IAT-3 is preceded by IAT-1 and IAT-2. CISSP certification is classified underneath the IAT-3 heading, which means the soldier or officer must meet certain criteria to qualify to validly take the exam. IAT-3 implies that he subscribes to the ISC Code of Ethics, has a minimum of five years as a security professional working in at least two of 10 given domains or a minimum of four years working in at least one of 10 domains, possesses a college degree (i.e., an officer) and has answered four questions about criminal history and background prior to taking the exam.
