How to Donate Books to Purple Heart Veterans
Some veterans that were wounded in combat receive a special military decoration called the Purple Heart. Because of the great scarifies made by such veterans for their country, there are nonprofit organizations that help support them by providing everything from medical care to clothing. Books are accepted for donation by the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation, including children's books, paperbacks and hardcover books. Donating your books to Purple Heart Veterans is fairly straightforward and is tax-deductible.

Gather the books you want to donate. Look through them to ensure they are in good condition with both covers intact, no torn or missing pages, no stains or markings.

Pack the books into sturdy cardboard boxes and tape the tops shut. Do not overpack the boxes, and check that they weigh no more than 25 lbs. each.

Clearly mark on the boxes that the donations are for the Military Order of the Purple Heart. You can write "Military Order of the Purple Heart donation" on the box or affix a label to it that says the same or something similar.

Call 703-256-6139 to receive the address to send your donations to, if you do not live in a pickup area--the person who answers your call can let you know if this is the case. Alternatively, visit veteranpickup.org to schedule a visit to pick up your donations, if you live in a pickup area.

Place your donations outside your home before 7 a.m. on the day the books will be picked up, if you scheduled a donation pickup.

Keep accurate records of your donations for tax purposes. You will not be given a receipt, as Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation donations are tax deductible at fair market value, and it's up to you to decide what that amount is, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Write down the date of your donation, as well as the fair market value of the books. The Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation's employer identification number (EIN) is 39-0983584.
