Add falling snow to this image using Photoshop.

One of the interesting things about working with digital photos is that you can use a graphics program like Photoshop to make alterations of many kinds, from adding fire effects to repairing flaws like over exposure. If you take lots of landscape photos, you might run into the problem of taking what would be a perfect picture, except that the atmospheric conditions are not quite right. For example, if you have a photo of a snow covered landscape it might be good if there was snow actually falling in the image. However, if there is not, you can easily add it using the various tools and functions of Photoshop.

Instructions

    • 1

Load the image that you want to work with onto your computer. The best approach is to transfer the image directly from a digital camera or similar source; however, you can scan in a printed copy if you have to.

    • 2

Open Photoshop. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog that appears, locate the image that you loaded and open it.

    • 3

Click on the "New Layer" button at the bottom of the "Layers" palette. Then use the "Paint Bucket" tool to fill the layer with black.

    • 4

Select "Filter" from the menu and choose "Noise." From the options, choose "Add Noise." In the dialog that appears, adjust the amount to between 100 and 200, click "Gaussian" and "Monochromatic" and click "OK."

    • 5

Select "Filter" from the menu and choose "Blur." From the options, choose "Blur More."

    • 6

Select "Image" from the menu and choose "Adjustments." From the options, choose "Levels." In the dialog that appears, move the black and gray sliders to the right until you have the number of white dots you want for your snow.

    • 7

Go to the "Layers" palette and change the "Blending Mode" of the top layer from normal to "Screen." You now have your snow. Save your work.
