How to Connect Computer Speakers to a DVD Player

How to Connect Computer Speakers to a DVD Player thumbnail
A pair of self-powered PC speakers can hook up to a DVD player for compact sound.

A DVD player connected to a set of computer speakers can provide quality sound while conserving space. Rather than hook up the player to an AV receiver and a full-size speaker package, the player can instead be connected to self-powered speakers using an audio Y-adapter. To work with a DVD player, the speakers must be equipped with their own built-in amplifier to provide power for the audio because the player does not transmit a powered signal. Any computer speakers that come with a a transformer and attached electrical cord for plugging into a wall outlet are self-powered.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up stereo computer speakers on the left and right of the DVD player, as far apart as desired but within connecting distance of each other since many models are equipped with permanently connected audio wires of a fixed length.

    • 2

Plug the cable from the left speaker into the Audio Out jack on the back of the right speaker.

    • 3

Plug the cable from the right speaker into the smallest of the three jacks on the Y-adapter.

    • 4

Connect the white and red stereo cables from the two remaining jacks on the Y-adapter to the audio outputs on the rear of the DVD player. Match the plugs to the colors on the jacks.

    • 5

Hook up the electrical cord for the speakers from the DC power jack on the right speaker's rear connection panel to an electrical outlet.
