How to Remove Suntour Cogs

For a long time, Suntour bicycle components came standard on mountain and road bicycles. The parts were lightweight, and high performance for the time, and as such were considered some of the best components made for bicycles. Unfortunately, recent advances in bicycle component technology have pushed these old parts to the wayside, and knowledge of their workings along with them. However, the tools to extract a Suntour cog from your rear wheel are still in production, and you can remove yours at home with one of these tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your bicycle in a dedicated work stand so that you can remove the rear wheel without the bike falling over. If you do not have a work stand, set the bike upside down on its handlebars and seat.

    • 2

Loosen the rear axle nuts using a 15 mm wrench and slide the rear wheel out of the dropouts. If your rear wheel has a quick-release hub, simply twist the lever on the non-drive side to loosen the axle and slide the wheel out of the frame.

    • 3

Set the wheel on a workbench or on the floor with the cog facing upward. Remove the drive-side axle nut. If you have quick-release wheels, unscrew the drive side of the skewer and remove the skewer from the wheel.

    • 4

Insert the Suntour freewheel remover into the teeth on the inside of the freewheel, near the axle. The tool should engage solidly with the freewheel and should not move when spun by hand. Use an adjustable wrench to spin the freewheel remover counterclockwise. The freewheel will detach from the wheel.

    • 5

Remove the freewheel remover from the freewheel and pull the freewheel away from the wheel hub. Clean or replace the freewheel and reinstall it by spinning it clockwise onto the wheel hub by hand. Reinstall the rear wheel on the bike using a 15 mm wrench or the quick-release skewer.
