Microsoft Publisher, part of the Microsoft Office Suite, helps users to create a wide variety of documents meant for publication including sales letters, brochures and newsletters. Microsoft Publisher 2000 cannot read files created with Microsoft Publisher 2003. If you have both versions of Publisher on different computers, you can use Publisher 2003 to make the files readable by Publisher 2000.

      Open the document in Publisher 2003.

      Click "Save as" in the "File" menu.

      In the drop-down box "Save as file type" select "Publisher 2000 (*.pub)."

      Click "Ok." Publisher 2000 can now read the document.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have a copy of Publisher 2003, ask the person you got the file from to save it as a Publisher 2000 document.

  • You might be able to change the file type without having Publisher 2003. Right click the file, select "Properties" and change the file type to Publisher 2000. This will not work for all files and also may change how the document looks when opened.
