How to Reset the Anti-Theft Code on a Car Stereo

By Jule Pamplin

Car stereos that come equipped with anti-theft systems may require a reset of the security code. In the event the battery is disconnected from the unit (the result of failure or replacement), you will be required to reset the four digit code that serves as a safeguard against theft of the stereo. You can take your vehicle to the dealership or other retail car audio outlet, or you can reset the code yourself for free.

Turn the vehicle on. The engine does not need to be running but the ignition should be on to power the stereo.

Press the "Source" or "Power" button to turn the unit off.

Press and hold down the "Minute" button (located to the left of the GM vehicle stereo's display. Some models require pressing and holding the left arrow button if no "Minute" button is present.) Release the button once the display shows "0000."

Press the "Minute" button (or left arrow) to set the value of the third and fourth digits of the anti-theft code. Release the button once the proper value for the last two digits is displayed.

Press the "Hour" button (or right arrow button) to set the first and second digits of the code. Release the button once the four-digit code is accurately displayed.

Press the "Mode" button to lock in the code you set. Turn the stereo deck on by pressing the "Source" or "Power" button to complete the reset.
