Thread the bobbin on the machine by placing the spool of thread on the spool holder at the back. Place the cap on the spool holder and pull the thread from the back to the thread guide at the top left and over to the top right where the bobbin winder is located. Disconnect the clutch by pulling the knob on the wheel away from the wheel. Thread any hole in the bobbin from inside out and place it on the bobbin spindle. Push the lock device located beside the bobbin toward the spindle. Plug the cord into an electrical socket and turn the switch on the side to the "on" position. Hold the thread at the top of the bobbin and step gently on the presser foot. Wind the bobbin to just slightly less than full. Remove the bobbin and cut the thread. Push the knob on the wheel back into place.

Open the shuttle cover under the area of the needle. Remove the bobbin cover with the latch holder. Remove any existing bobbin. Place the bobbin in the bobbin case and slide the thread through the tension control and into the slot at the edge. Hold the bobbin case by the hinged latch and place it back into the bobbin area. Place the shuttle cover back into position. Turn the wheel toward you until the needle is up as high as it will go.

Thread the sewing machine starting with the thread on the spindle at the back of this model 158. Place the cap on the thread. Pull the thread from the spool vertically to the thread guide above the spool, then across the top of the sewing machine to the guide toward the back, then the front guide. These guides do not require threading, but have a slit. Run the thread down around the tension control and back up to the arm and catch the thread guide in the arm. Slip the thread into the guides down beside the needle and thread the needle left to right. Hold the thread to the back and turn the wheel toward you to catch the bobbin thread. Pull the bobbin thread through the slot under the needle (where it comes up automatically when you turn the wheel) and pull both threads to the back. Place a double fold of fabric under the presser foot and close the presser foot onto the fabric with the latch right behind the needle. You are ready to sew.
