How to Make a Ribbon Memo Board

A ribbon memo board is a decorative bulletin board often used to hold photos and other printed material. Utilitarian bulletin boards are typically covered with cork, but a ribbon memo board is most often covered with fabric and crossed with strips of ribbon. Hang a ribbon memo board as functional wall art in a bedroom, hallway, kitchen or family room to display your favorite photos or to help keep your family organized in style.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut a piece of decorative fabric 4 inches wider and 4 inches longer than the face of the stretched artist's canvas that will form the base of the memo board.

    • 2

Place the cut section of fabric, decorative side down, on a flat work surface. Smooth any wrinkles in the fabric. Center the canvas face down on the fabric.

    • 3

Fold the fabric over the top of the canvas. Staple the fabric to the wood strip along the back of the canvas. Fold the fabric over the bottom of the canvas and staple it in place to the wood strip.

    • 4

Fold the ends of one fabric side strip at a diagonal, as if you were wrapping a gift. Fold the side strip over the canvas and staple it in place. Repeat this step with the remaining fabric strip on the opposite side of the canvas.

    • 5

Cut a strand of ribbon to fit taut from the back wood strip at the top of the canvas, down the face of the canvas and around to the wood strip at the bottom back of the canvas. Staple the ribbon strand in place, 3 inches from the left side of the canvas. Place vertical ribbon strips every 3 inches across the width of the canvas. Adjust the spacing of the ribbons as desired.

    • 6

Cut a strand of ribbon to fit taut from the back wood strip on one side to the back wood strip on the opposite side of the canvas. Staple the ribbons in place, 3 inches from the top of the canvas. Repeat this step to place horizontal strips of ribbon across every 3 inches along the height of the canvas. Adjust the spacing as you like.

    • 7

Glue flat-backed glass beads to each ribbon cross point with hot glue. Buttons, rhinestones and other small embellishments will also work.

Tips & Warnings

  • Select an artist's canvas with the desired dimensions of the ribbon memo board. Select fabric that coordinates with your room decor and select 1/2-inch ribbon that coordinates with the fabric.
