How to Resume Downloading on Internet Explorer

Unlike other popular browsers, Internet Explorer does not have a built-in download manager. This can be frustrating since you can not pause downloads or easily resume them after an Internet Explorer crash. Although it is sometimes possible to resume a download using the cache and temporary files created while downloading, this method is unreliable and there is no guarantee that it will work. Luckily there are many third-party download management add-ons that you can easily install with Internet Explorer, so that you can control downloads in a similar fashion to other popular browsers.

Instructions

  1. Without Download Management Add-on

    • 1

Open Internet Explorer and visit the website where you originally started the download.

    • 2

Click on the same download link. Browse to the exact same location to which you originally started downloading the file. Note that the file name must be the exact name as the original download. If you altered it the first time you attempted to download the file, you must alter it again. Otherwise, let the file save as its default file name.

    • 3

Click "Save" and the download will resume from the cache and temporary files that it stores while downloading the file.

    With Download Management Add-on

    • 4

Download and install a download manager add-on for Internet Explorer. Note that there are many different versions of download management software available, some with free versions and some with paid versions.

    • 5

Open Internet Explorer and click on "Tools." Select "Manage Add-ons" to access the add-on manager. Locate the download manager add-on that you just installed, highlight it and select "Enable" from the bottom right corner.

    • 6

Restart the browser. The download manager toolbar will be available at the top of your Internet Explorer browser.

    • 7

Navigate to the desired file and click to download it normally. Save the file to any location that you wish. Click "Save." The file will appear in the download manager queue.

    • 8

Highlight the file and press the "pause" button on the add-on manager to temporarily stop your download. Press the "resume" button on the download manager add-on to resume your download at a later time. Press the "Delete" button to remove the file from the download queue.

Tips & Warnings
