How to Put an iPod Into Disc Mode in iTunes

Disc Mode is a built-in feature on iPod portable media players that you can use in conjunction with the iTunes program to troubleshoot your iPod device. When the iPod is in disc mode, you can fully control the iPod device from the iTunes program. Normally, when you connect the iPod to the iTunes program with the iPod data cable, the iPod is automatically placed into disc mode. However, if you are experiencing problems with your iPod device, you may need to manually place your iPod in disc mode.

Things You'll Need

• iPod
• iPod data cable
• Computer with iTunes

Instructions

iPod with click wheel

1. Fully charge your iPod device.

2. Set your iPod's hold button to the on position and then set the hold button to the off position.

3. Press and hold the "Menu" and "Select" buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears on your iPod's screen.

4. Release the "Menu" and "Select" buttons.

5. Press and hold the "Play/Pause" and "Select" buttons simultaneously until the Disk Mode screen appears.

6. Connect the iPod data cable to the bottom of your iPod device and attach the other end of the iPod data cable to an available USB port on your computer. Open the iTunes program. The screen on your iPod will say "Do not disconnect."

iPods without a click wheel

1. Fully charge your iPod device.

2. Set your iPod's hold button to the on position and then set the hold button to the off position.

3. Press and hold the "Play/Pause" and "Menu" buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple or iPod logo on your iPod's screen. Release the buttons.

4. Press and hold the "Previous" and the "Next buttons simultaneously until the Disk Mode screen appears on your iPod's screen.

5. Connect the iPod data cable to the bottom of your iPod device and attach the other end of the iPod data cable to an available USB port on your computer. Open the iTunes program. The screen on your iPod will say "Do not disconnect."

Tips & Warnings

• This process may erase some of your custom settings. If possible, it is always advisable to backup your iPod before placing the device in disc mode.
