How to Duplicate a DVD on an iMac

The iMac OS X operating system includes built-in software for creating disc images from DVDs and making copies from the image. The Disk Utility program allows you to duplicate DVDs with only one DVD drive. You will not be able to duplicate copy-protected discs, however. The Disk Utility only copies non-copyrighted DVDs or discs for which you own the copyright. Any disc you have created in iDVD or DVD Studio Pro will work with Disk Utility DVD duplication.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the DVD you want to copy in the DVD drive. Open the "Finder" folder in your dock. Scroll to the bottom of your "Applications" folder and click "Utilities." Double-click "Disk Utility."

    • 2

Click the disc in the list of available drives on the left. Don't choose the disc session under the name of the disc; choose the disc itself.

    • 3

Click the "Images" tab and click "New." Click "Image from" the name of the DVD you want to copy. Type in a name for your disc image and click "DVD/CD Master" in the Image Format window.

    • 4

Click "Create" and wait for Disk Utility to create an image of the DVD. When the process is finished, you'll see the disc image in the list of available drives on the left.

    • 5

Click the name of the original DVD on the list. Click "Eject" at the top of the window to eject the disc. Insert a blank disc in the DVD drive.

    • 6

Click the name of your disc image on the list. Click "Burn" at the top of the screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using high-quality blank DVD media will allow your DVD burner to write at a faster speed without causing errors and ruining discs.
