How do I Secure Bottles in a Drill Press?
Drilling a hole in a bottle with a drill press requires the bottle be secured. If the bottle is not secured, the pressure of the drill press may cause it to move or rotate. Although not purposely made to secure the bottle, a simple cradle can help keep the bottle stable and secure while drilling holes with a drill press. This cradle can be created using common hardware and household items.

1
Drape a towel over a plastic miter box as a cushion. With the shock absorbency of the towel and the plastic, the bottle should be safe as long as you drill slowly.
-
2
Place the bottle lengthwise in the miter box. If your bottle is narrow, use more towels along the sides of the miter box to secure the bottle.

3
Place the miter box, towel and bottle assembly on your drill press. Hold it in place with your hands as you drill the hole in the bottle. If you are concerned about the assembly slipping, use a nylon cargo strap to secure the assembly to the drill press plate.

4
Drill your hole. To cool the bit, pour water on the bottle and bit. Use a slow drill speed, if possible, to reduce friction. Use light pressure to avoid cracking or shattering the bottle.
