Many state prison systems offer work release programs for inmates who are nearing their release dates. Work release programs allow prisoners to work outside the prison for a period of time and then return to custody. The program is intended to help inmates begin reintegrating into normal life after serving out their sentences. The program is not available in all states and the decision to offer it belongs to the state governments. As of 2010, no comprehensive website or list of the states that offer the program exists. As such, you must contact each state prison management agency for information.

Prison management agency names vary from state to state. For example, in North Carolina you must contact the Division of Prisons and in Washington State, contact the Department of Corrections.
