How to Apply a Nicotine Patch

How to Apply a Nicotine Patch thumbnail
A nicotine patch helps you quit smoking.

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, using a nicotine patch as a smoking-cessation aid doubles your chances of quitting smoking. Many people, the Academy reports, start with a full-strength patch that delivers 15 to 22 mg of nicotine every day for four weeks and then switch to a 5 to 14 mg patch for another four weeks. The patch is available without a prescription, but those with certain health conditions or pregnant women should consult with their doctor before using it.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the patch and only the patch. This means you will have to stop consuming all other nicotine products on the day you begin using the patch. Continuing to smoke while using the patch can cause health problems.

    • 2

Open the sealed package and avoid touching the sticky side of the patch.

    • 3

Place the patch on a clean, dry area of your skin that is free of hair. The AAFP recommends placing it anywhere between your neck and waist, such as on the stomach, the upper arm or your side, for example.

    • 4

Press firmly on the patch with the palm of your hand for 10 seconds, FamilyDoctor.org recommends. The patch should be flat and free of wrinkles.

    • 5

Wash your hands after touching the patch to remove any traces of nicotine, FamilyDoctor.org recommends. You don't want it to get into your nose, eyes or other sensitive areas.

    • 6

Remove the patch at bedtime and replace it with a new one in the morning, if you wish. Some people have trouble sleeping when wearing the patch.

    • 7

Put the patch somewhere different each time you apply a new one. This is mainly to reduce irritation. FamilyDoctor.org advises users that they should wait one week before using a spot again.

    • 8

Dispose of the patch by folding the sticky sides together and throwing it somewhere that children and pets can't get it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Change the patch at the same time each day so you remember to do it.

  • Water won't disturb a correctly applied patch.

  • Don't apply the patch to burned, cut or sore skin.

  • You might feel stinging or burning shortly after applying the patch. This should subside in about an hour or so. If you suffer further side effects from after its application, such as dizziness, headaches or blurred vision, alert a doctor. The dosage might be too strong for you.
