How to Convert MOV Files to MPEG for Free
An .mov video is a file type optimized for the Apple QuickTime movie player. Any video files created or edited in QuickTime will be automatically saved as .mov files. However, there are times where a Moving Picture Experts Group (.mpg or .mpeg) file is more acceptable. More video players recognize .mpg files and, therefore, some prefer them for online video streaming. You can use video conversion software to convert an .mov to an .mpeg file.

1
Download video converter software. Look for software that allows you to convert MOV files to MPG or MPEG files (see Resources). Once you've downloaded the software, double-click on the downloaded file to open it.
-
2
Open the video converter software. Click "File" in the menu bar, choose "Open" to bring up an explorer window, then select the MOV file you wish to convert. Click "Open" or "OK" to open the file.

-
3
Change the conversion settings so the file outputs as an .mpg. The specific method depends on the software you're using, but typically there's a drop-down menu that allows you to choose the export file format.
-
4
Input any extra information the converter program asks you for. You may have the option to add a file name, choose a save location for the new .mpeg or to compress the file to save hard drive space.
-
5
Export the file. Make sure the video has a recognizable name and save it to an easily accessible place on the computer. Once it has exported, test the video to make sure it works correctly.
