How to Use Wheel Chocks

How to Use Wheel Chocks thumbnail
Wheel chocks should always be set on the end of the vehicle most likely to roll.

Wheel chocks are crucial to any automotive safety kit. The chocks are designed to prevent a vehicle from rolling forward or backwards when raised from the other end. Wheel chocks can be purchased from any automotive parts store. In case wheel chocks cannot be purchased, a large cinder block or piece of wood will do the job. The proper use of a wheel chock will also help to prevent the jack from slipping while it is supporting a vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the vehicle on a flat and level surface. Set the parking brake.

    • 2

Determine which direction the car would roll if raised up. If the vehicle is raised up from the front, the back wheels will need to be chocked.

    • 3

Place the chock between the ground and the back of the back wheel. Kick the chock toward the wheel to ensure it is secure.

    • 4

Place a second chock to the front of the same wheel. Kick it in place to secure it.

    • 5

Raise the vehicle from the front. The chocks will prevent the vehicle from rolling back.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wheel chocks also can act as a temporary parking brake.

  • Always chock the wheels when raising a vehicle or if parked on an incline. This will prevent the car from rolling back or forward.
