How to Diagnose Wireless Problems thumbnail
Wireless problems can hamper the speed of your computer.

Problems with a wireless connection affect computer users around the world. If you experience a connection issue with your laptop or desktop computer, pinpoint the source of the problem and fix it or provide an IT (Internet Technology) professional with the reason for the error. You can diagnose and fix most common wireless issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that your hardware works. Select the Control Panel then click the "Device Manager" icon. The Device Manager panel is displayed. Click the "Network adapters" arrow to view the listed devices. Make sure that you have a Wireless Access Network (WAN) installed on your computer.

Ensure that your computer can connect to the network. Navigate to "Start," select "Control Panel" and select "Network and Sharing Center." The Network and Sharing Center window is displayed. From the "View your active networks" section, click on the words "Connect or disconnect" located on the right. A pop-up panel displays the available wireless connections and the connection status.

Use the software that comes with your laptop to fix your wireless connection. Since wireless issues occur so frequently, many computer makers install software on laptop devices to diagnose and fix common wireless issues. To enable this utility, open your Network Connections box, right-click on the icon for your wireless connection and choose the repair function. This program then attempts to figure out the issue or tries to connect you to another wireless access point.

    • 4

Power cycle your computer. Turn off your computer operating system. This procedure often fixes connectivity issues that occur with personal computers.

    • 5

Find out the strength of your connection. If you receive a message on your computer that states you have little or no wireless connection, you've lost your connection or do not have much signal strength. When you notice that this issue occurs, go to a different part of your home to see whether the wireless signal strength has improved.
