How Do I Interpret a Smalley-Trent Personality Profile?

How Do I Interpret a Smalley-Trent Personality Profile? thumbnail
The Smalley-Trent Personality Profile is a fast and easy personality check that is considered insightful.

The Smalley-Trent Personality Profile was created using the temperaments of four animals: lion, otter, golden retriever and beaver. Each possesses a type of temperament that may be related to a person or a combined temperament found in a person, which is similar to the way other personality profiles work. This type of personality test is relatively easy to learn, understand and use and can provide an interesting way to teach temperament and personality differences to children.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the Smalley-Trent Personality Profile sheet and read through the characteristics under each section. Consider only the "positive traits" for now. Each section is headed by an animal species, and under each are a list of characteristics that someone can relate to as either belonging to his personality or not.

    • 2

Circle the characteristics that most resemble a relaxed, "at home" personality. Some people act differently when home compared to when at work or in social settings. For comparison baseline, consider only "at home" first.

    • 3

Add up the number of circled items in each section, double that number and write it down near that section. These numbers form the scores. If one is predominantly high and the other three low, then the high score is the test taker's Smalley-Trent Personality Profile. If two numbers are relatively high and two relatively low, then she has a combined personality.

    • 4

Compare the score(s) to the strengths and weaknesses of each animal heading. For example, if he scored high in the lion section and low in the other three sections, his personality is a lion: a strong, independent leader, but he may also be cold, unemotional and cruel. On the test sheet, the positive traits are the ones circled. Corresponding traits may demonstrate how others perceive the positive traits.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Smalley-Trent Personality Profile you are using will come with a score chart explaining the different strengths and weaknesses of each character type.

  • Personality Profiles are fun but are not a diagnostic tool in and of themselves. Do not assume that a certain score on the Smalley-Trent Personality Profile is indicative of a psychological condition without first consulting a medical professional.
