How to Use Skype With Firefox

Call the world from your Firefox browser using Skype.

Skype is an instant messenger, a video chat service and a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) provider. Using the VoIP component of Skype, customers make inexpensive phone calls to locations all over the world using the Internet. After installing Skype, you have the option to add a special plug-in to your Firefox browser. This plugin allows you to click a phone number that you see while surfing and call that number from your browser.

Instructions

1. Navigate to the link shown in References and click "Download Now." Skype will display a File Save dialog.

2. Click "Save" to save the installation file to your hard drive. This file, SkypeToolbars.msi, installs Skype's Firefox plug-in.

3. Double-click the file after it downloads. A wizard will start and display a license agreement. Read the agreement, check the box next to "I Accept the Terms in the License Agreement" and click "Next."

4. Click "Firefox Extension" and click "Next." Click "Install" to install the plug-in.

5. Open Firefox if it is not open and click "Tools." Select "Add-ons" to view the Add-ons window. Click "Enable" next to Skype Extension for Firefox and then "Restart Firefox." Firefox will enable the plug-in and restart.

6. Click "Tools" and select "Skype Extension for Firefox." An Options window will open and display a list of countries. Highlight your country and click "OK."

7. Navigate to a Web page that has phone numbers. Click a number. Skype will open and display a "Start Call" window. Click "OK" to place the call. To add the phone number to your contact list, click "Save" at the bottom of the Skype window.

Tips & Warnings

• Phone numbers on Web pages highlighted in blue are free if they have a Free Call label. You need Skype credit to call numbers that are not free.
