Windows Defender often comes pre-installed on PCs operating on a Windows Vista platform.

Windows Defender is software that protects Microsoft Windows operating systems against unwanted pop-ups and security threats caused by malware. This standard security program often comes pre-installed on PCs operating on a Windows Vista platform, but can be easily enabled or disabled through the computer's "Control Panel" menu. If for some reason Windows Defender is not installed, it is available for download on Microsoft's website. If it fails to install properly, there can be a number of reasons why.

Check the system requirements. Often programs fail to install because computers do not meet the right specifications. According to Microsoft, Windows Defender is not compatible with computers operating under Windows 2000. Windows Defender also will not run on a computer with a version of Windows that cannot be verified as a genuine copy, meaning that the serial number for your copy of Windows is not the only one in existence. Computers must have at least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM, 20 MB of available hard disk space, Internet access and an Intel Pentium 233-megahetz (MHz) or higher processor. If your system meets these requirements, proceed to step two.

Check to see if Windows Defender is already installed on your computer. Click on the Windows start button. Type "Windows Defender" in the search field. If an icon labeled "Windows Defender" appears, the program is already installed. Double-click the icon to open the program. If the program opens with the message "No unwanted or harmful programs are on your computer," the program is installed and working properly. If "Windows Defender" does not appear to be installed or working properly, proceed to step three.

Download Windows Defender from Microsoft's website (see "Resources"). Follow the prompts to download the software and start Windows Installation Wizard. Select "Use Recommended Settings" and click "Next." Click "Install." You should receive a message stating that installation is complete. If installation fails, restart your computer.

Clean your registry and try to reinstall Windows Defender again. You can download free registry cleaning software that is quick and easy to use (see "Resources"). Install the system care software and complete a full system scan of your registry. Once complete, restart your computer. Repeat step three to install Windows Defender.
