Teddy bear

The secret to making a teddy bear out of old clothing is to have a pattern that is small enough to pin and cut all of the pieces out of the one article of clothing. You can create a homemade teddy bear out of old coats, quilts, blankets or adult clothing. Children's clothes present an interesting dilemma, but you can still be use them by combining several pieces where the pattern, color and texture of the fabric go together.

Step 1

Cut the old clothing apart at the seams by cutting on each side of the seam and discarding. Lay the fabric out so the right side (front side) of the fabric is facing out and the grain of the fabric is on a vertical axis.

Step 2

Cut out the teddy bear pattern. Pin it to the fabric so the pattern follows the grain. Look at the individual instructions for each teddy bear pattern to ensure each piece is pinned on the fabric correctly. Cut out each pattern piece.

Step 3

Follow the instructions on the teddy bear pattern for pinning and sewing. Turn the teddy bear right side out when complete.

Step 4

Stuff the teddy bear to the desired firmness. Sew the opening shut. Sew the eyes, nose and mouth into place.

Tip

Joints can be added to the teddy bear so that you can pose it. Add the joints after sewing each piece and before stuffing the bear. You can add purchased teddy bear eyes before you stuff the head.
