How Do I Set My Computer to Shut Down After Disk Defrag in Windows Vista?
The Windows Vista operating system, like previous Windows operating systems, includes a disk defragmentation utility that can be used to rearrange files. This operation improves computer speed and efficiency if performed regularly. However, because the defragmentation process can take quite awhile, users generally prefer to set their computer to perform this operation overnight. Although Windows Vista does not include a power down option in its disk defragmentation utility, you can set your computer to shut down after disk defragmentation in Windows Vista using free, add-on software.
Instructions

1
Download disk defragmentation expansion software. There are several free options for expanding the disk defragment utility that are compatible with Windows Vista. These options include "UltraDefrag," SpeeDefrag" and "Auslogics Disk Defrag" (see Resources).
-
2
Open the add-on application and use the "schedule" function to specify a date and time for the defragment utility to run on a regular basis.

-
3
Enable the automatic shutdown option. Depending on the extension/add-on you use, this option will either be in the schedule section or in an "advanced" or "extra" options area. Once you have enabled this option, save the changes and exit.

Tips & Warnings
Do not forget to leave the computer on when you schedule the defragmentation process. Though you can set the computer to shut off after defragmentation, you cannot set it to turn on. If the computer is powered down during the designated time, the defragmentation utility will not run.
