How to Write Inscriptions
If you want to give a relative or friend a personal, meaningful gift, but you just aren't the crafty type, one option is to purchase a gift they will enjoy and add your own inscription to it. This can be as simple as writing your own message in a book of poetry, or engraving the inscription on a new watch or piece of jewelry. Whatever gift you choose, the inscription must be heartfelt and expressive to truly make the recipient feel special.

1
Use a pen and paper to brainstorm freely about the person for whom you are writing the inscription. Ask yourself if they would prefer something formal or funny, and write down anything that comes to mind. Options to consider include whether or not you have nicknames for one another, if there is an inside joke or something personal you share, or whether there is a line from a poem or a song lyric that is particularly meaningful to you both.

2
Decide how long you want the inscription to be. Most inscriptions are fairly short, often no more than a phrase or sentence, particularly if it is being engraved on a small object, like a ring.

3
Write the inscription, choosing each word carefully. In some cases you may want to use your name and/or the name of the recipient, while in others the words are enough.
-
4
Choose a format and script style for your inscription. If you are writing it by hand, you may want to practice on a separate piece of paper. Capitalize consistently; for example, either "Everything I have is yours," or "Everything I Have is Yours."
