How to Mount CDs With Nero

How to Mount CDs With Nero thumbnail
Use Nero to mount image files of CDs and DVDs.

Converting your physical CDs and DVDs into image files and storing them on your computer protects your discs from damage and gives you quicker access to data, media and software. You can use image files on your computer by mounting them with a virtual drive program. The popular disc burning suite Nero Burning Rom includes a virtual drive utility called Nero ImageDrive, which you can use on your computer to access your virtual CD or DVD collection. Nero ImageDrive supports disc image files in ISO and NRG format.

Instructions

    • 1

Click Start" in the bottom-left corner of your Windows desktop and browse through the programs menu until you find the "Nero" directory. Select "Nero ImageDrive" from the list of utilities bundled with Nero Burning Rom.

    • 2

Mark the "Enable drive" check box under "First Drive" or "Second Drive" to enable a single virtual drive on your computer. Check both boxes if you need to work with two CD or DVD image files at once. Note the "Disable Nero ImageDrive" in the bottom left corner, which allows you to turn the virtual drives off.

    • 3

Click on the appropriate tab for the virtual drive you created. Click on the "..." button next to the "Image" text box and select the CD or DVD image file that you want to mount. Click on the "Options" tab and enable "Mount images at startup" if you want Windows to restore the image file to the drive after rebooting the computer.

    • 4

Click "Start" again and select "My Computer." You should see a drive letter assigned by Windows for the virtual drive you enabled. Access it like a normal drive to retrieve data, media or software off the virtual disc.

    • 5

Load Nero ImageDrive again and then select "Eject" under the appropriate drive tab to dismount the image file when you are finished working with it.

Tips & Warnings

  • You also can use Nero Burning Rom to record physical copies of your image files. Simply choose to copy a disc and then select the virtual drive when Nero Burning Rom asks you to locate the disc you want to copy.

  • Nero no longer bundles ImageDrive with Nero Burning Rom. The last version distributed with the virtual drive utility was version 8.0, which the company released in October 2007. If you are using a version of Nero Burning Rom released after version 8.0, you will need to use another virtual drive program.
