Register the name of your company with the city if it is a sole proprietorship or partnership. You do this at the Register of Deeds office in Charlotte with a Doing Business As form. The office number is 704-336-2443. Corporations must register with the Secretary of State's office. Registration documents can be obtained by calling the SoS office at 919-807-2225.

File for a federal tax ID number if you are planning on having employees or are incorporated. You need Form SS-4 to file for a number, and can find this on the IRS website (see Resource) or by calling 800-829-4933.

Contact the tax office to obtain a privilege license, also known as a business license. The office is located at the Hal Marshall Center. Fill the application out, including your new federal ID number or Social Security number and business name.
