How to Fasten a Double Rivet
Rivets are metal fasteners that hold two items together. Rivets are useful in leather working attachments and in craftwork at junctions. A double rivet has a flat head on the exterior of each end for a finished appearance on both the wrong and right side of crafts and work. Rivets are available at craft shops in several sizes to accommodate different thicknesses of materials.
Instructions

-
1
Slide a rivet into a hole-punch tube to determine the correct size on the hole punch. The rivet will slide into the tube on the correct size.
-
2
Turn the correct hole-punch tube so that it faces straight down on the punch.
-
-
3
Place one of the pieces of material or leather in a hole punch at the area of the junction.
-
4
Squeeze both handles of the hole punch to puncture through the material or leather.
-
5
Place the second item of material to attach underneath the first one with the hole in it.
-
6
Place the second item of material to attach underneath the first one with the hole in it.
-
7
Mark a dot in the hole with a marker on the second item where they will join.
-
8
Punch a hole in the second piece of leather or material on the mark.
-
9
Set one piece of material on top of the other while aligning the holes in each.
-
10
Lift the materials to slide the pointed half of a double rivet through both holes from underneath with the point facing up.
-
11
Center the other flat half of the double rivet on top of the point and slightly press down with a hand to hold it in place.
-
12
Place a rivet setter on the rivet so that the bottom jaw is underneath the bottom half and the top jaw is over the top half. Squeeze both handles together to join the two halves securely.

Tips & Warnings
Make certain that the hole is the correct size for the rivet, or the junction will be too tight and bind materials, or too loose and not hold securely.
Thicker materials like leather require more force when punching holes in them. A hole punch will puncture through two thinner cloth materials at one time.
Double rivets are available in silver and gold tones as well as copper at craft stores.
Double rivet kits are available with the correct size setting tool included in the purchase.
