How to Design Your Own Vietnam Vet Ball Cap

Dogs tags are another symbol you could use on your hat.

Designing your own Vietnam veteran inspired ball cap can be a unique way to show off your service or to show your support for veterans. The hardest part of designing the cap will be finding the hat itself or the embroidery company to make the design you want on the cap.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the style of cap you wish to use. Keep in mind that if you use certain colors for your design such as orange having a hat color like red will make the design less visible. Black goes with just about any color, making it a foolproof choice.

    • 2

Find the symbols or words you wish to use. Typically designs used by vets feature service medals earned in duty, military slogans and symbols specific to a platoon or squad. A less common possibility might be a slogan such as "I support Vietnam vets" or "Vietnam Vet 196_".

    • 3

Draw a half moon shape on a piece of paper. This will represent the hat. It can be either a side or frontal view.

    • 4

Draw a basic outline of your chosen symbols and words on the half moon. Use the paper to decide where the symbols should go.

    • 5

Use a custom hat embroidery company such as Crazy Custom Caps or a local shop such as a sewing shop to make your hat. You will need a full color image if you are using a military insignia, but generic symbols like eagles and common ones such as the U.S. flag will probably not need an image. However, if you want your design to be exactly as you envision it you should supply appropriate reference materials.
