How to Improve Grammar Writing

While the physical mechanics of writing are quite simple, the composition of grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs often presents more of a challenge. Writing grammatically requires attention to detail and knowledge of the structures that make up the English language. If you feel that your grammar is lacking, take time to explore the rules that govern English grammar. By studying these elements of language, you can increase the likelihood of creating written works that are grammatically proper in form.

Instructions

1. Learn the parts of speech. By developing an understanding of the role that each word plays within a sentence, you can ensure that you produce grammatically complete sentences. Study each part of speech, learning what they mean as well as which words commonly appear in that part of speech.

2. Study sentence types. While it may seem like there are an endless number of sentence types, in truth, there are four main types of sentences from which all other sentences can be derived. Explore declarative, imperative, exclamatory and interrogative sentences and learn the hallmarks of each sentence type.

3. Practice properly conjugating verbs. Many individuals make grammatical errors when attempting to conjugate verbs, particularly those of the irregular variety. Learn how to conjugate verbs properly for both case and number to ensure that you use the correct verb forms in your sentences.

4. Learn how to select the appropriate pronoun for gender and count. Pronouns are another grammar stumbling point for many writers. To compose grammatically correct sentences, you must ensure that your pronoun is proper in grammar and in count. By considering the gender and count of the antecedent, or word to which the pronoun is referring, you can increase your likelihood of selecting the correct pronoun.

5. Study comma usage. While commas may seem small and unimportant, these punctuation marks actually play a large part in determining meaning. To compose grammatically correct sentences, you must understand how commas work and where commas should be placed in sequences and between clauses.

6. Begin with simple sentences. If struggling with grammar, begin by reducing the complexity of your sentences. You are less likely to make grammatical mistakes when composing simple sentences instead of complex grammatical structures. As your skills improve, gradually increase the complexity of your sentence formations.
