How to Use Photoshop Elements 5.0 to Add a Watermark

You may have seen watermarks in action when a cashier held your $20 bill up to the light, checking for a specially printed detail on the paper. Watermarks help prevent counterfeiting, but they are not just for money. To protect your professional photographs, documents or other images, add a digital watermark with a couple of clicks in Photoshop Elements 5.0. Elements can help you stake a claim to your work, even when putting it on the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop, click "File" and select "Open." Browse to the image to add the watermark to and double-click the file name so it opens in the Photoshop workspace.

    • 2

Click the "Type" tool, which looks like a "T" on the "Tools" palette. Select a font and text size from the toolbar at the top of the screen.

    • 3

Position your cursor over the picture; it does not matter where, as you'll be moving it. Type a word or phrase, such as "COPYRIGHT 2010," "PRIVATE," "DO NOT DOWNLOAD" or "Property of [Your Name]."

    • 4

Click the "Edit" menu, click "Transform" and select "Rotate." The text becomes highlighted with boxes around it. Twirl the text so it appears to be on a diagonal from the bottom left corner to the top right corner. Drag it into place in the middle of the picture and press the "Enter" key to set it and remove the boxes.

    • 5

Click the "Window" menu and click "Layers" to open the "Layers" palette; note that the palette may already be open on your screen. Double-click the new layer with your text on it to open the "Layer Style" window. Check the boxes in the "Styles" column to give your watermark different appearances. For example, checking the "Inner Glow" and "Outer Glow" boxes will make your watermark appear neon and lit up, whereas checking the "Bevel and Emboss" box will make your watermark appear solid and shadowed. Click "OK" when you have the look you want.

Click the three-line icon at the top right of the "Layers" palette and select "Flatten Image." Click the "File" menu and select "Save As." Type a new name for the image. Do not save it with the same name as the old one or you will not be able to access the non-watermarked version again.
