How do I Look Up an Insurance Company Code?

North American businesses are classified by codes and organized by industry.

Each insurance company in America, Canada and Mexico has a unique company code. This is called the NAICS code, which stands for "North American Industry Classification System." These six-digit numbers are assigned to different types of businesses to help the government keep them organized. To look up an insurance company code, use the national NAICS database or other databases that keep this information.

Instructions

1. Visit the website of the U.S. Census Bureau, NAICS Code or Sic Code. These websites have a database of business codes.

2. Type "insurance" into the search box to view the breakdowns of all the different types of insurance companies.

3. Click on a subcategory of insurance. For example, if you want to look up your life insurance company's NAICS, select the category "Direct Life, Health, & Medical Insurance & Reinsurance Carriers."

4. Look for the six-digit number to the left of the insurance category. This is the NAICS code.
