How to Dye Tips of Hair
Whether you're going for emo layers or punk rock hot pink tips, dying hair tips a different color from the rest of your hair is in style. Whereas normal dying can be accomplished alone at home, layering your hair color, especially if dying tips to create a straight line, requires the help of a friend. Keep in mind that hair dye is very harsh on hair and will change its feel and softness, so choose a color you can commit to and avoid needing to bleach and re-dye. Does this Spark an idea?

Obtain a hair dye in the desired color. As a general rule, you will not need to bleach your hair if you are going darker. If you are going lighter, you will need to bleach your tips before dying.

Divide the hair into three groups and separate the groups with hair clips. The first group should be the top 1/3 of your hair, the second group should be the middle, and the last group the bottom 1/3.

Wet the bottom layer and have a friend apply the dye to the bottom 1/4 inch of your hair. Go across the bottom in 1-inch-wide pieces and wrap the pieces in foil when complete. Hold the foil in place with a bobby pin. Work as fast as possible.

Leave the dye on the bottom row for your allocated dying time. Remove the foil and rinse the ends under running water until the water runs clear.

Apply the recommended conditioner to the bottom hair and use a clip to tie it back.

Repeat these steps with the two remaining groups of hair and rinse the conditioner from the hair upon completing the dying.
