How to Share the Screen on a Remote Desktop

Remote desktop connections do not just have the capability of allowing one user control of the desktop, but can actually allow several users. When setting up a server, system administrators can choose to either force desktop or screen sharing, leave it up to the user to indicate, or force individual connections only. Since most remote desktop servers are setup to allow the user to choose, sharing a desktop screen with another user just requires indicating so in your remote desktop client's options.

Instructions

Open your remote desktop client. Depending on the remote desktop client you use, the option to share the remote desktop may or may not be available. Some of the default remote desktop clients that come with today's major operating systems have sharing enabled by default, but do not allow the user to easily change this option if it is disabled. You may find it easier to use a free, third-party alternative such as TightVNC or UltraVNC.

Open the options dialog and move to connection sharing. Choose the option that allows shared connections and click "Apply" or "OK" before entering your remote desktop server's connection information as you usually would and clicking "Connect." While all remote desktop clients allow the restriction of screen sharing, not all will be worded the same. Your client's options dialog may vary.

Test if connection sharing is enabled on the server by having another user go through the same process before connecting to the remote desktop server along with you. If they are unable to connect or you are disconnected when they try to connect, you will have to contact the system's administrator and ask them to enable connection sharing on their remote desktop server. Or, if you have access to the remote desktop server's settings and permission to do so, you can enable the option yourself before attempting another shared connection.
