Master the task of reading in first grade.

If you are like many students, you will tackle the tricky task of reading in first grade. Learning how to read is a complicated process that requires effort and dedication. To become a skilled reader, you must understand the letters and how they go together to create words. While learning to read is not something that you can do overnight, if you dedicate yourself to the task, you can leave first grade ready and able to read written words.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with letter sounds. Letters are the building blocks of words. Begin by studying all of the letters, consonants as well as vowels, and learning what sounds these letters can combine to make.

    • 2

Explore common letter combinations. After studying the letters in isolation, learn about how they commonly combine. Study common letter combinations, such as "st" or "ck," and memorize the sounds that these letters make when combined. Pay special attention to letter combinations that form unexpected sounds, like "ph," which often creates an "f" sound.

    • 3

Sound out simple words using your knowledge of letter combinations. Begin to explore whole words by studying two-, three- and four-lettered words and sounding out each term, using your knowledge of the sounds that letters combine to create.

    • 4

Study first-grade sight words. Each year, you will study a different set of sight words. Sight words are words that, by the conclusion of that grade, you should be able to immediately recognize by sight without sounding them out. Explore first-grade sight words, like those in the resources section and commit these common terms to memory.

    • 5

Work with an fluent reader who can help with difficulties. Reading is not something that you can easily learn alone. Sit down regularly with a parent or older sibling who is skilled at reading and ask this individual to help you build your skills.

    • 6

Read regularly. The more you read, the better you get at it. Read every day. If you make a habit of reading, you will quickly see your skills improve.
