How do I Apply Elbow Braces?

How do I Apply Elbow Braces? thumbnail
Many athletes prefer elongated braces, while others elect to go with more compact braces.

The primary purpose of an elbow brace is to immobilize the elbow while ensuring proper alignment of your tendons. This is why many people who suffer from tennis elbow (epicondylitis), tendinitis and other elbow injuries rely on braces to help alleviate symptoms of these ailments: sharp pain, swelling and inflammation. Many athletes wear braces, particularly those who engage in repeated motions, such as swinging a golf club or tennis racket.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the severity of your ailment by consulting your doctor or trainer. They may also recommend a certain brand and size of brace for you to buy. Choose a brace that is lightweight and breathable; this is especially important for athletes.

    • 2

Straighten your arm and relax your muscles as you smoothly slide the brace on with your opposite hand. Rotate the brace so the correct side is facing out (typically the side with the logo on it).

    • 3

Pull the brace up to your elbow so that it rests directly over the joint. Fasten any straps to wrap the brace firmly around your elbow, and add any inserts that came with the brace.

    • 4

Test the brace's fit by bending your arm repeatedly. If you notice any discomfort, you should readjust the brace. Continue to wear it as long as deemed necessary by your doctor or trainer.

    • 5

Remove the brace occasionally to wash it, according to its cleaning instructions. This is particularly important for athletes who use braces during competition, as athletes tend to sweat profusely.
