1
Shampoo and condition your hair. Afterward, don't gather your hair on top of your head or "bunch" it up in order to prevent tangling. Pat it dry with a towel so it's not dripping, but your hair should be left wet throughout entire process.

2
Part your hair in four to six sections using your wide tooth comb. With each section, apply a creamy leave-in conditioner to your hair and then use a scrunchy to hold the section in place, or loosely plait it if you are not using scrunchies. Leave one section of hair loose after applying the leave-in conditioner. This will be the section that you start with.

Separate a piece from your loose section of hair, sizing the piece according to how big or small you want the waves of your final style to be (bigger braids equal looser curls, smaller braids equal tighter curls). Apply setting lotion to the separated piece of hair and comb through. Separate the piece of hair into three and then proceed to braid down to the ends. When you reach the end of the braid, use a rubber band to secure it or, if using rollers, roll ends up an inch or two, according to the length of your hair. You also may secure the ends with a two-strand twist.

Repeat steps three and four until the entire head is completed. Once finished, wrap hair with a satin head scarf or bonnet. According to PrettyWrap.com, using a satin hair wrap on natural hair, or any type of African-American hair, is important because cotton absorbs moisture from the hair and consequently leads to breakage, split ends and frizzy hair.

5
Sit under a hooded hair dryer or allow hair to air dry. If desired, you also may wear the braids as a style for a day or two before taking the braids out.
-
6
Apply hair oil to your hands and fingers and proceed to unravel the dry braids. Once the entire head is taken out, use your fingers to massage the hair on the scalp and cover the parts that are showing. If you slept on your hair while it was drying, the braids may be flat, so separate the waves with your fingers in order to create a fuller look.

Tips & Warnings
When braiding the hair, braid tightly or loosely depending on the desired look. Tighter braids will give you more wave definition, while looser braids will give you less definition.
