How to Switch From Earthlink to AT&T DSL

When you sign up with a DSL Internet provider such as EarthLink or AT&T, you are given a self-installation kit which typically includes a modem and any necessary cables. However, most modems are tied to one Internet service provider, meaning that if you want to switch ISPs from EarthLink to AT&T, your EarthLink modem cannot work with AT&T.

Instructions

    • 1

After cancelling your EarthLink account, disconnect the EarthLink DSL modem from your computer by removing the Ethernet cable.

    • 2

Remove the phone line from the phone jack, as well as from the EarthLink DSL modem's "Telephone" port.

    • 3

Connect the modem supplied to you by AT&T in the self-installation kit to your PC using the included Ethernet cable.

    • 4

Connect the AT&T modem to the phone jack with a phone cord. One is usually supplied with the self-installation kit. Plug the modem into a power outlet.

    • 5

Insert the installation CD (if one came with your kit) into your computer. Follow the prompts that appear to install the software for your modem.

Tips & Warnings

  • If EarthLink requests that you send back the old modem, do it as quickly as possible to avoid incurring fees.
