The inability to view certain file attachments can be frustrating.

In an effort to protect users from potentially dangerous files, Outlook 2007, by default, blocks email attachments containing certain file extensions, as provided on the "Blocked attachments in Outlook" page (see Resources). In fact, "all versions of Outlook since Outlook 2000 Service Release 1 (SR1) include a security feature that blocks attachments that might put your computer at risk for viruses or other threats" according to Microsoft. However, if you would like to receive attachments containing a specific file extension, you can do so by modifying the default Outlook 2007 setting in your registry.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Windows Start menu and then select "Run."

    • 2

Enter "Regedit" and then hit "OK." Select "Yes" when Windows prompts you, Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?"

    • 3

      Navigate to the following branch:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security

    • 4

Backup your system by right-click on the "Security" folder, select "Export" and then choose a destination on your pc.

    • 5

Place your cursor on the left panel, right click and then select "String value."

    • 6

Right click on the newly created string value, select "Rename," enter "Level1Remove" and then hit "Enter" on your keyboard.

    • 7

Right click on "Level1Remove," select "Modify" and then enter the file types you would like to unblock. For example, if you would like Outlook 2007 to unblock .bat and .exe file types, type ".bat;.exe" in the "Value Data" field and then click "OK." You can add additional file types by adding a semi-colon followed by the file type.

Restart Outlook for the changes to take effect. You have successfully unblocked attachments that Outlook 2007 deems to be dangerous.
