How to Edit a Google Business Listing
Google introduced a new service to Google Maps for business owners in April 2010. The service, called Google Places, displays business listings integrated with its mapping and search services. Through Google Places, business owners can control how their listings appear on the Internet, including pictures, video and announcing specials at no charge. These listings appear to Google users when using Google Maps or Google Search, along with reviews from past customers. In an effort to keep the information as accurate as possible, Google allows editing of Google Places listings.

Tips & Warnings
If you own a business, it is important to verify that you own it so you can control its listings through Google Places. Your edits appear instantly as opposed to if you were making them as non-owner. Google gives you several ways to verify your ownership (see Resources) after you have added your business listing or "claim" your listing.

You are correct that it is important that a business claims its Google Places listing. In addition to editing the page, businesses should enhance their listing by adding all the features Google offers such as images, video, coupons, reviews and citations. This will help a business rise to the top spot in their local category.
