How to Troubleshoot My Lexmark 6170 Fax
The Lexmark 6170 is an all-in-one printer, scanner and fax that prints in either color or black and white. The 6170 can send and receive faxes using the built-in scanning and printing functionality and the internal modem that connects to a standard telephone line. Diagnosing the possible causes of a problem with sending and receiving faxes is the first step of the troubleshooting process.

1
Plug the phone line into the port on the back of the 6170. Make sure the plug is fully plugged in. Connect the other end of the line to a telephone outlet. The fax will not operate if not connected to a phone line.
-
2
Load the document text-side up in the automatic document feeder when sending a fax. Loading the document incorrectly will cause a blank page to be transmitted.
-
-
3
Fill the paper tray with blank paper. Faxes cannot be received and printed out unless there is enough paper in the input tray.
-
4
Replace the black ink cartridge if it is low or empty. Faxes cannot print if there is not sufficient ink available. Make sure the color ink cartridge is also installed. The 6170 will not operate unless both the black and color cartridges are installed.
-
5
Set the 6170 to answer fax after a certain number of rings if needed. Press the "Fax" button on the control panel. Press the "Options" button repeatedly until "Answer Fax When" is displayed. Press the down arrow to choose the number of times the phone should ring before the fax answers the line. The maximum is the "After 5 rings" option. Press the "Enter" button to save the setting.
