How to Power on Computer With Keyboard

You can either set a single key stroke to turn on your computer, or a password.

One rarely-used feature that most computers come equipped with is the ability to turn on your computer by pressing a button on your keyboard. This comes in handy when your computer tower is in an out of the way location, such as being stored under a desk or in a cupboard. The feature is disabled by default, meaning that you'll have to access system settings before your computer can be started by the stroke of one key.

Instructions

    • 1

Start your computer and enter the BIOS Interface. To do this, you'll need to press a certain key during your computer's start-up phase. Depending on manufacturer's settings, this will be either "F2," "DEL," or "ESC." Usually your computer will tell you during startup which button you need to press. If the screen doesn't appear, check your computer manual for details.

    • 2

Find the "Power Management" setting. This is where you edit anything to do with the startup and shutdown of your computer.

    • 3

Enable the keyboard power-on function. When you do this, you'll be given a choice to press a single key or use a password. In this case, a password requires you to type in all of the required keys in order before your computer will start. If you opt for a password, make sure to store it in a safe place. If you forget your password, you'll have to turn on your computer using the regular power button.

    • 4

Save the changes by exiting the BIOS command and allowing your computer to complete startup. The next time you turn off your computer, you should be able to start it by using your keyboard.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful using the BIOS command. If you make a mistake it can be difficult or even impossible to fix your computer after.
