How do I Get Rid of a Bad Smell From a Garbage Disposal?

Save

Your garbage disposal works well in getting rid of food items that would otherwise fill up your trash can. Since you're constantly disposing of a variety of foods in the unit, odors will develop from time to time as any leftover food particles sit in the disposal and start to rot. When this occurs, you can quickly eliminate the bad smell and keep your disposal in good condition.

Things You'll Need

  • Citrus rinds
  • Ice
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Pour 2 cups of ice and the rinds from two oranges or lemons into the disposal and grind. If you do not have the fresh fruit on hand, substitute for 2 cups orange juice or lemon juice. Including the ice while grinding creates a more substantial textures that allows the ingredients to work their way through the disposal more slowly, thereby giving you a more thorough cleaning.

  • Pour 2 cups baking soda followed by 2 cups vinegar down the disposal, if the fruit and ice do not remove all of the odor. This combination foams and breaks apart any bacteria, making this a helpful cleaner for odors caused by fish or other raw meats.

  • Rinse about 2 quarts hot water down the drain when all odor is removed. This flushes out any leftover rind particles which prevents new bacteria from forming.
